No experience required!

All you need to use this tool is your own good sense about the perfume or cologne you want to develop. You don't need college. You don't need chemistry. You don't have to do any mixing to get your fragrance compound made.

And the fragrance you design will be yours alone. This is not the same as simply putting your name on a ready made fragrance oil that is available to everyone and anyone. The fragrance you design with this tool is exclusively yours. The manufacturing - even of the sample - does not begin until you provide the formula, using this tool. Then your fragrance will be custom blended.

An industry tool newly available to you

The tool you need to design your own perfume - without experience and without any training - is a computer program called The Perfumer's Workbook. It is not new. In fact, users of this tool number in the thousands and include industry professionals, trainees, and serious perfumery students.

This tool has long been an integral part of the perfumery training programs offered by its inventor, Stephen V. Dowthwaite. It has been included, in the form of a CD, with the PerfumersWorld Foundation Course and is given to students of PerfumersWorld who attend both their 5-day and advanced workshops. From time to time an older version is made available, for free, for those using older, slower, computers.

Today you can have this tool in your hands in a matter of minutes as an instant digital download, ready to set up and use on your desktop, laptop, or tablet computer. Or, for greater flexibility, you can install the software on a thumb drive memory stick and carry it with you, for security purposes, and use it on the computer of your choice.

Older versions of The Perfumer's Workbook could be used only on older Windows computers and never on Apple's Mac. Today's Perfumer's Workbook is new generation software compatible with all 32 and 64-bit Windows computers as well as all recent Macs.

Here's how easy it is to use

Ten screenshots from The Perfumer's Workbook show you how easy it is to use. After you have installed it on your computer, and executed these ten steps, you'll be ready to order a sample of the perfume or cologne you just designed - for just ten dollars.

Step 1 (Screenshot #1)

When you launch The Perfumer's Workbook the Quick Start menu, "What do you want to do?" is displayed. To begin the process of designing your own perfume, click on the "Create using the Graphic Odour Design's Wizard." But notice, before clicking on this link, the seventh link on the menu, "Order my sample online." Once you finish designing your perfume you can click on this link to order a sample quantity of the actual perfume you have just designed. Now let's begin designing a perfume.

Step 2 (Screenshot #2)

You now enter The Graphic Odour Design Wizard with three choices. You can start a New Formula (on your own, if you are ready), Open Format (if you are ready to work with a classic fragrance format, or you can select a format from the fragrance types listed. The fastest was to begin creating your own fragrance is to select a fragrance format, highlight it with the cursor, and click on "Next." In this example we have highlighted "Fougere," a very all-time favorite format.

Step 3 (Screenshot #3)

Now you can enter a working name for your perfume, the date, and your name (the perfumer). For now, that's all you need to do at this screen. After you've entered the information, click on "Next."

Step 4 (Screenshot #4)

Now, if you have studied perfumery with PerfumersWorld, you have the opportunity to adjust your formula using the ABC's of Perfumery which you learned in the Foundation Course. If you have not been student of PerfumersWorld, not a problem! You can just press the "Calculate ABC's Automatically" button. Depending on the ABC percentages already shown, this may or may not make an adjustment in these percentages. Now you can click on the "Next" button to proceed.

Step 5 (Screenshot #5)

You are now shown a graphic representation of your fragrance based on the ABC's of Perfumery. When you first use the Wizard this graphic representation may seem strange to you. If you continue working with perfume, in a short time you will understand what each color represents and why it is important. After you have finished writing your formula, you can watch how is changes during evaporation by using the Graphic Odor Display.

For now, we will proceed by clicking on "Next".

Step 6 (Screenshot #6)

Now you must make some important decisions. But, while these decisions are important, they are not at all difficult to make. If you are making a perfume, you will NOT be selecting "Flavour 352 materials only." Nor will you be selecting "Flavour applications."

If you are an advanced perfumer developing a fragrance to use for a shampoo or body wash, where your perfume would be interacting with the functional chemicals needed to make these products, you might select "Perfume applications." But let's leave that for the future.

If your intention is to make a natural perfume, you will check the box "Natural 139 materials only."

If you are going to mix the perfume yourself, from ingredients you have on hand, you will check "Stock 125 materials only." The quantity of in-stock materials here is given as 125 for demonstration purposes. If you have added your own stock numbers to The Perfumer's Workbook, you may find yourself with more than 125 materials to work with, or you might have fewer.

If you do not wish to purchase your own raw materials and mix them yourself, simply check "Use all 559 materials in the database."

If you wish, you can now check the "Ethanol" box, to remind yourself that in order to complete your perfume, the formula you have designed will be mixed with ethanol (alcohol). You do not have to check this box as the Wizard will assume that your formula will be blended with alcohol. (If you were creating a fragrance for a shampoo, body wash or to be blended with some other product, you would consider the other options here.)

Now you can select the maximum number of aroma materials you want for your formula. The default is 50 and this is a good option. But you could ask the wizard to use as many as 90 aroma materials in your formula. making it a good deal more complex and, possibly, more expensive.

After having checked "Use all 559 materials in the database" and "Ethanol," click on "Next."

Step 7 (Screenshot #7)

Although you now see several options, for your first perfume, simply click on "Finish."

Step 8 (Screenshot #8)

When you are asked if you want to start a new formula in column 1, click on "Yes."

Step 9 (Screenshot #9)

Now you can enter the working name of your perfume and click on "OK."

Step 10 (Screenshot #10)

You now see your finished formula displayed, with all the aroma components. Be sure to SAVE the formula, using a "Save Formula 'l'" button under the "Formula" heading on the toolbar.

You now have the formula for the fragrance you designed.

How to create an international production formula for your homemade perfume
How to create an international production formula for your homemade perfume

Homemade perfumes generally lack commercial value, regardless of how wonderful they may be, because their creators fail to record how their perfumes were made. To profit from a perfume, to sell it, to sell the rights to it, or have somebody sell it for you, you must be able to make more of it. To make more you need the formula, the record of how the perfume was made: what materials were used and how much of each material was used. While the formula is nothing more than a recipe, a simple piece of paper, it is the key to unlocking your perfume's commercial potential. With the formula in your hand you have the ability to make a few dozen bottles more or, like the celebrities, tens of thousands of bottles. How to create an international production formula for your homemade perfume is a guide to getting you started on the right foot, correctly documenting everything you do as you are doing it, and then using these notes with some basic mathematics to write a simple, accurate, universal formula for your perfume. Writing formulas for your perfumes can change the way you think about them. With your formulas in hand your creations are no longer "here today, gone tomorrow." Now, thanks to your library of formulas, your perfumes become immortal!

Making Perfume By The Quart: A do-it-yourself project book

While much is written about perfume – the beautiful fragrances... the beautiful bottles – little is available on the "mechanics" of perfume production – the steps that take place on the "factory floor" where a beautiful vision is turned into a finished product, a "ready to sell" perfume. Now you can experience all of these steps, hands on, by making just one quart of your own perfume. If you follow each chapter and do what you are instructed to do, you will end up with from 8 to 64 bottles of your own perfume, depending on the capacity of the bottles you select. Along this "insiders journey," each step is profusely illustrated with professional color photographs and you'll learn — • Exactly what alcohol you'll need and where to get it • Why you'll want (just a little!) water in your perfume • What type bottles you'll need and why you cannot use others • Why you will use a spray and not a cap • How to fill and seal your bottles • How to label your bottles with the correct information so they will be legal for sale • How to select a name for your perfume that will allow you to acquire powerful trademark rights free. If you are a developer of scents you are encouraged to use one of your own for this project. If you are not a scent creator yourself you'll learn how to get a fragrance oil that is exactly right for this project. Online sources are given for all required supplies and materials. Nothing can hold you back from starting your project immediately!

Creating Your Own Perfume With A 1700 Percent Markup! (3rd edition)

Perfume is famous for the markup it can achieve, even for a middle market fragrance. While "everybody knows" that perfume costs next to nothing to make (not completely true) the making of it is often considered an esoteric secret. "Creating Your Own Perfume With A 1700 Percent Markup!" details how a 3-person company with no experience created their own fragrance in response to a marketing opportunity that was too good to pass up. The book explains exactly what was done to create a fragrance for that opportunity but it is far more than a history of the author's project. "Creating Your Own Perfume With A 1700 Percent Markup!" lays out every step in the process of creating your own perfume, either as a do-it-yourself project – and without the benefit of automated equipment some compromises and workarounds are required – or full bore professional production under your supervision. Either way you will be producing a quality fragrance at a remarkably low cost. Do you have a marketing opportunity that would be wildly profitable if only you could obtain your fragrance at a ridiculously low cost? "Creating Your Own Perfume With A 1700 Percent Markup!" is the guide you need to do it.

Naming Your Perfume And Protecting Your Name

A really great name, a special name that is just right for a particular perfume or perfume marketer (or entrepreneur with money to invest!) can be worth a ton of money. But few individuals with great ideas ever manage to cash in on those brilliant ideas. Instead they wait while others "discover" their idea, acquire legal rights to it and make all the money while they are left out in the cold without a penny having been earned for what was once THEIR idea.

If you are struggling to name your perfume and are looking for a name that will have real value, "Naming Your Perfume And Protecting Your Name" will help you weed out low value names and point you to names that have better marketing value plus the potential to become valuable assets in themselves.

If you have a great name you want to protect but no fragrance, "Naming Your Perfume And Protecting Your Name" will guide you through the simple steps you must take to acquire a legal right to that name before someone else grabs it! Best of all, "Naming Your Perfume And Protecting Your Name" shows you how to gain strong legal protection for your name without a lawyer and without spending more than pocket change.

Never had an idea for a product name? Never thought much about perfume? "Naming Your Perfume And Protecting Your Name" may stimulate your interest in a whole new game that, when played well, can make you lots of money without your having to leave the comfort of your home office.
