NOTE: When I first posted this page, Google had just edged out Alta Vista as the top search engine but Dogpile, Excite, and AllTheWeb all had their followings and, at times, you could find information on these alternate search engines that was missed by AltaVista and Google. Times have changed. Second tier search engines of the past that continue to exist pull up mostly paid advertising. Microsoft's Bing is the first really new search engine in a long time. It will probably last but it is doubtful that it will change the terrain very much. Today clearly the costs of creating a new search engine is beyond the reach of any but the richest and most technologically advanced companies. —PG |
