Sources Of Perfume Making, Bottling & Packaging Supplies
Our own listings of verified (sources we have used ourselves) and non-verified sources (sources with whom we have not yet done business). Websites and/or phone numbers are given for each of these sources. Both U.S. and International sources are included. Sources are included for:
Fragrance The "juice" that powers your perfume. We list sources that offer fragrance (perfume) oils by the ounce and by the drum.
Alcohol Perfume can be made without alcohol but for almost all commercially successful perfumes, alcohol is an essential ingredient. Depending on your goals and your price considerations, you may pick one blend of alcohol over another or you may insist on the finest pure alcohol. We list sources for quantities ranging from a gallon to a railroad tank carload. We also provide helpful information direct from the U.S. government's bureau of Alcohol and Tobacco. If you don't know about it already, you'll want to understand what is meant by "SD" alcohol and how it saves you money without sacrificing quality.
Test Strips (Blotters) To let others sample your perfume. In bulk, printed or non-printed.
Bottles For Your Perfume in quantities of from one to hundreds of thousands.
Closures Caps, fine mist spray pumps, orifice reducers in small quantities and in bulk.
Labels For your bottles. They can also be used on outside packaging such as boxes and display tubes.
Direct Printing Print directly on your bottles when producing 50,000 bottles or more. Here are various sources and solutions.
Boxes Printed or non-printed. Custom Only.
Miscellaneous Packaging Ideas to make your perfume stand out on a retail shelf. Add value to your perfume product at a price you can afford, even when working with small quantities.
Specialized Shipping Supplies If you are selling wholesale, you may want to look into some of the specialized shipping supplies that are available to perfume makers.
Dyes & Coloring Want a special color for your product? Here are supplies that can help you achieve it.
Graphic Design You don't need to be a member to use our Graphic Designer's Forum but, if you are developing a perfume product and are looking for a designer, this is one useful source.
Contract Packaging When you are bottling and packaging larger quantities than you can manage in your own workshop, contract packagers can help out. Many also offer graphic design services and can help you obtain bottles and closures at a reasonable price.
Sampling Supplies & Suppliers Offering small samples of your fragrance is the ideal way to make sales or licensing deals. Here are some sources and suggestions to creating samples, both in small quantities on a very limited budget and for a national rollout.
Machinery Desktop size machines that can help you automate a small perfume bottling operation, should you desire to have total control and do everything under one roof.
Chemicals Perfumery raw materials you will need if you are compounding your fragrance from scratch.
The Industry
Listings of both major and important minor players in the fragrance industry including:
Major Fragrance Marketers The large and medium sized marketers of perfume. These are good names to become acquainted with so that you can be up on trends. You'll find many names you are familiar with ... and some you may never have heard of.
Fragrance Creators These are the companies that actually create fragrances for the marketers, most of whom do not employ in-house perfumers. Many of these companies are quite large but a few are of small to medium size and will work with smaller accounts.
People Who Make Perfume Profiles of individual perfumers. Most of those listed here are not available to assist with your project. These are listed to give you some background and history of the industry.
Small Companies Selling Their Own Perfume These companies are living proof that you don't have to be a marketing giant to sell perfume today. The owners of some of these companies are or have been members of the Perfume Makers' Club. If you become a member and launch your own perfume, we would be delighted to list your company too. (There is a duplicate of this list that anyone can view at the end of Alexandra Bristol's article Why I Love Selling My Own Perfume To Gift Shops.)
Trade & Professional Associations Whether or not you are ready to join, you should be aware that these organizations exist. Many of them have excellent public resources at their website to encourage the use and understanding of perfume.
Perfume Makers' Forum Here is where you can ask questions and get information. I personally read every message posted on this board and respond to as many as possible. Sometimes, even when I do not have the answers at my fingertips, I can get the information for you in a matter of a few days. When enough members ask the same question, I make an effort to provide an answer in depth, often in the form of an article or new page of sources.
Classified Advertising Free To Members. As a Perfume Club member, you may use our Classified Ad pages to promote your products, solicit sources of materials, sell overstocks of materials anything perfume-related. These classified ads are viewed by the public and indexed by all major search engines. This means that you, as a member of the Perfume Makers' Club, can run ads for your products that will reach millions of people around the world all for just your membership fee.
Trade Show Calendar We encourage you to be aware of trade shows where you can learn new technology, get fresh creative ideas and, when the time is right, offer your own products to other businesses. Gift shows are of particular interest and we direct you to gift shows all over the U.S. where you can exhibit your fragrance and meet buyers owners of gift shops and specialty shops. Often going to two shows a year can keep you in business. If you are not ready to start selling, you should consider going to gift shows to see how others are selling their fragrances ... and what fragrance products are hot. Going to shows is absolutely essential if you are trying to build a wholesale fragrance business.
Trade Publications All major trade publications now have websites. Depending on the publications, you may be able to get a free subscription through the website. We make frequent trips to these websites both for marketing and technical information. Here is where you can read what companies helped to put together your favorite new perfume the boxes, the fragrance itself, the paper for the boxes, the package design, the bottles. Recently we were surprised to discover that we had bottled one of our own fragrances in a bottle made by the same Germany glass manufacturer who provided bottles for the Britney Spears (Elizabeth Arden) "Curious" perfume. And, did you know that the company doing the packaging for "Curious" specialized in packaging for the medical and bio-tech world! If you are seriously interested in developing a fragrance business, it is worth your while to become a regular reader of at least two or three of these trade publications and their websites.
Perfumery Schools, Courses & Instruction If you develop a serious interest in the fragrance making side of perfume, there are perfumery schools and courses you can take to help you develop your knowledge and skills. Some are correspondence courses; some require your physical presence. If you have an interest in becoming a perfumer and are now only at the beginning stage of your career, these resources might provide the education you need to advance.
Back Issues Of Club Newsletters All back issues of Perfume Makers' Club newsletters are available to members. Recent articles include "Making Perfume In Bulk," "Finding A Contract Manufacturer," "Finding A Perfumer," "Custom Bottles: Not A Good Idea" and "Finding Your Fragrance."
Technical Information For those who are interested in the ingredients used in perfumery, we provide sources of information and links to databases.
Forums At Other Websites If you cannot find an answer to your questions within the Perfume Makers' Club, these links take you to other community forums, for both hobbyists and professionals.
Perfume Museums France has many perfume museums but museums devoted to the art of perfumery and perfume bottles (packagine) are found in other countries too, including some countries where you wouldn't expect to find them.
Government Regulations We list the major sources of US and European government regulations. If you are a small business, checking out these sources will probably tell you more than your lawyer can tell you, although of course, you'll want your lawyer to interpret the regulations for you. Save money by starting your lawyer off in the right direction!
Government Assistance We list a number of U.S. government agencies that can be helpful to you as you develop your business. We have been pleasantly surprised by the personalized aassistance we have received from people at some of these agencies, and the very useful information found on these websites.
As a member, you will also receive the club's Monthly Newsletter.
Available to members only, the Perfume Makers' Club monthly newsletter offers marketing strategies, technical articles and inspirational notes aimed at helping you keep your interest in perfume and your profits from perfume high and going higher!
The resources available to members expand from month to month.
Resources available to members expand regularly as we add sources we meet at trade shows and resources we discover (sometimes by accident) while seeking answers to members' questions and resources for projects of our own. While many of the listed resources have websites, these websites are often very, very difficult to locate unless you are lucky enough to happen upon the right keyword or unless someone tells you where to find them. Many of the most important perfume-related websites are not, and probably never will be, optimized for the search engines.
